“I know exactly what you’re going to say Zara, and the answer is no. You are not, under any circumstances, going back to four to see Eilif, no matter how much you want to know his story. This is not open for discussion.”

“That’s not your decision to make Seth. You don’t own me.”

“Don’t I?” I stepped into her where she was leaning against the worktop and plucked the coffee mug from her hands, setting it aside before planting my own hands on either side of her, preventing her from escaping me. “Because I seem to remember you agreeing to be mine.”

“Yes, and you agreed the same thing. That doesn’t mean I have the right to tell you what you can and can’t do,” she shot back. I’d known this wasn’t going to be an easy conversation, but I hadn’t expected her to be quite so stubborn.

“Sweetheart,” I decided to try a different tack. “It’s not that I’m trying to control you, I’m just trying to keep you safe. Surely you can see the difference.” Her expression softened just enough for me to hope I was starting to get through to her.

“I know that. Of course I do. You know how much I worry about you when you go off doing your guardian stuff. But that doesn’t make me try and stop you doing it. Does it?” I huffed.

“That’s different Zara. I’ve been doing my guardian stuff, as you so eloquently put it, for centuries. When was the last time you interacted with an ancient vampire?” Ha! That had her stumped. I decided to press ahead while I had the advantage. “I want you to promise me that you won’t go sneaking around behind my back and try and find a way to see Eilif again on your own.”

“Fine,” she finally conceded, although in a tone that let me know it was anything but fine. “I promise I won’t try and sneak back to visit Eilif on my own.” I relaxed at her words. I knew how much she hated lying, and the words had fallen easily enough from her tongue that I could believe them.

“Thank you,” I whispered, pressing my forehead to hers for a moment in relief, before dropping a kiss on her nose. “I have to go and do my guardian stuff now, try not to get into mischief without me.” I passed her coffee back to her as I released her and headed for my office. At least now I could hopefully concentrate on the things I should be doing. Although, I mused, we still had her stubborn insistence on accompanying me earlier to deal with, and in view of her obvious reluctance to accept that I knew best when it came to decisions about her safety, I was still planning to show her in no uncertain terms later exactly who was in charge.
